  1. Madden for Serbia - FYR Macedonia, Stieler for Portugal - Spain. Good choice made by UEFA regarding the second, hot game.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Excellent second appointment for Stieler, I think the most sonorous clash so far, the Iberian derby Portugal - Spain.
Madden with Serbia - Macedonia as first game.
It is too early but you can notice that something was already planned regarding the expectations of committee. However, of course, everything can still happen.

ENG-POL: Gil Manzano and team, Seidel
      SVK-SWE: Lechner and team, Demeshko
SRB-ESP: Kruzliak and team, van Dongen
      MKD-POR: Mazeika and team, Hassan
      ITA-GER: Madden and team, Borkowski
      CZE-DEN: Vincic and team, Obukowicz

    3. I would swap Madden und Vincic, otherwise I agree with your predictions.

For the last three games (semi-finals and final) I expect three of Bastien, Vincic, Kruzliak and Madden.

Gil Manzano and Stieler probably will be out due the successful Spain and German teams. Lechner, Mazeika and Gözübüyük are rated below the four above mentioned, I think.

      Delete
    4. I would have expected it vice versa, to be honest. My feeling says that Madden, Kruzliak and Mazeika are actually rated lower than Bastien, Gözübüyük and Vincic. We'll see.

      Delete
    5. I agree with Bastien and Vincic on the top and Mazeika not to be there, but I've some doubts whether the "ranking" of Madden, Kruzliak and Gözübüyük. Different as Bastien and Vincic all three didn't have any CL games yet, regarding EL games Kruzliak (20 games) is ahead (Madden 17, Gözübüyük 8). The Dutch is also the youngest of these three. I think, we'll see UEFA's assessment in the semi-final appointments (Bastien/Vincic and then one of Kruzliak/Madden/Gözübüyük). Maybe the presence of England in a semi-final, could be a small disadvantage for the Scotish referee team.

  3. So, Seidel has no restday and isn't with his team (around Stieler) in the evening/night before the game... Furthermore he has to pass 600km from Lubin to Gdynia, either in the late night or on his matchday. I wonder if this appointment wasn't avoidable? There were some other ARs as 4th official for Poland-Sweden possible, for example one of the Austrian or the French crew.

  5. For those who watch Slovakia-England: What do you think of Mazeika's acceptance on the pitch?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No managing the game, only same calls (with missed illegal use of arms (twice) and two mandatory yellow cards). The players didn't respect him much. No communication between the referee and players. That was also the case in Bastien's game, but French referee was really firm, Mazeika wasn't.

      8.1

      Delete
    2. I unfortunately share these impressions. No real game-management, communication and low acceptance level. Actually most of his calls were correct, including 2 correctly rejected penalty appeals. I also appreciated that he consistently punished time-wasting and stayed relatively unimpressed by the Slovakian pressure. On the other hand, this could have maybe been prevented by more effectively managing the game.

12' - Sweden's penalty appeal, what do you think?

    1. No penalty, or at least referee can be backed.

    2. Penalty for me. No intentions at all by the polish defender to play the ball and careless tackle in the back. Not concequent when Vincic whistle freekick for the polish attackers every duel with the Swedish defender.

Excellent decision for simulation in the first situation. Harsh YC the second simulation.

      Delete
    3. I think the reason for Swedish player's fall was contact with legs and that was created by Swedish player, not the Polish one. At least acceptable if not correct call for me.

  7. Now a missed offside by AR2 leading to a crucial incident. Very good decision by Vincic: clear simulation, but the player was in offside so AR2 did a potentially crucial mistake.

    2. Good decision- no penalty. But IMO the YC its not needed. Here was a legal contact and therefore the goal kick only for my opinion is the best solution.

      Delete
    3. One thing to add: when Swedish player stood up, he opened his arms like asking for a penalty. Referee can also consider this attitude before showing a card for simulation, it is not only the action but also the intention to deceive referee. However, in this case, I must say, Vincic was already convinced before the gesture by player.

  9. Clear pushing imo missed penalty.

(The simulation moment)>>No simulation there is contact with The body.

The coach of Sweden, he gave a handshake??? Imo New rule, first 4th have to give a public warning and when Vincic came he have to show yellow to The coach.

  13. Clear Penalty! Good call, imo 10 yellow cards for a u21 to much. And sad for Vincic, he missed The clear pushing in the penalty area, Sweden deserve a penalty. And the second simulation, no simulation, better to give a goal kick.

Good personality if we speak about marks, 7,8 (8,5)

Without that lost concentration between 50' and 60' (two missed yellow cards) this performance was worthy of 8.8 or even more. Absolutely top class regarding control level, body language, mimic, gestures, authority, etc. Of course, it was the most difficult game so far.

8.6 would be my final mark

    2. Tbh, I agree with most of his decisions (e.g. first video, reckless foul, not SPA). A clear lack was definitely the wrong evaluation of the illegal use of arms - two missing whistles, at least one of them reckless too. Furthermore the third video showed a reckless foul as well, no doubt.

But my main problem is his personality. In every single video he makes a very passive impression. It seems as if he is really annoyed by the game. We all are referees and we all know that there are sometiems games you're really annoyed by and you feel sometimes very uncomfortable. I've seen Mazeika in some other games too and he never made the impression he made yesterday. I think, his passive approach, especially in the very first minutes, was a very important reason for losing acceptance (and match-control in some parts). Unfortunately very important points for improvement regarding personality/communication/approach, furthermore the one or the other wrong decision - I think, Ray's 8.1 is a very generous mark.

  16. Not the best first half from Bobby Madden and assistants. The only goal from huge offside (it was problematic who played the ball, though) and after possible simulation not punished. First yellow card could or maybe should have been a red card for SFP as well. AR2 with one poor offside call due to bad positioning.

    1. For me a public warning would have been appropriate. The only doubt I have after first watching: mistake or an acceptable tactical decision (which obviously worked in the aftermath)? Maybe a video can clarify that.

Other interesting moments: SPA in 26'? Simulation in 28'? AR2's offside decisions were spot on, maybe except the first one - a Portuguese defender seemed to make it level in the middle.

Apart from that, strong body language, preventive warnings during fluent play, good reaction to dissent (cards have to follow in the second half if it should crop up again).

So far well done, specially in the soft skill area.

      Delete
  20. Smooth first 45 minutes for Stieler, match under full control, high acceptance, alert management, good communication and no major issues so far. Correctly denied Portuguese penalty claim (28'). Having said that, in my opinion the YC for Neves (3') seemed unjustified, as no reckless contact existed. One minute after ASR Seidel seemed to have incorrectly risen the flag as the Spanish attacker was level. But waiting for Ray's video's however to form a final opinion om both situations.

    1. He had to work hard for that match control. I'm really impressed how he reached it by an aggressive (putting a finger on players' chests), but actually well-working attitude.

The early YC was a tactical choice because there were already three cynical fouls in 1,5 minute. One can discuss that, but stepping in with YC calmed down things.

Two strong verbal warnings against Deulofeu's dissent. Surely a YC should follow next time.

  24. An enjoyable match with beautiful goals and even more enjoyable refereeing by Tobias Stieler! An outstanding performance in a challenging game. A very clear line was shown, and Stieler immediately recognized the Portuguese frustrations when they arose and reacted strongly and appropriately with the needed sanctions. He continued his approach regarding dissent in a logic (and necessary) way by issuing a YC to Semedo. Compliments to Stieler's team, and it's a pity that the 'Mannschaft' will most probably block Stieler's chances to continue in the tournament...

    ReplyDelete
  25. I watched only the second half, I saw a good Stieler. I liked so much when he immediately booked a player from POR who had gone to make complaints in front of AR.
However, with Germany in semifinal unluckily his tournament should be over.

      My views:
      - Serbia's first goal should have been disallowed due to clear offside (most likely the referees didn't know who played/touched the ball, therefore perhaps they both should get 7.9?, but we'll never know the details)
      - I would have strongly prefered a RC in the first situation (waiting for your opinions in order to assess it as important mistake or not)
      - no second YC to #16 SRB is still acceptable, I think
      - correct handball penalty call - expected ball, outstretched arm
      - more diagonal positioning would be nice
      - more prevention / interaction with players needed
      - many doubtful throw-in calls, many protests regarding that

      Delete
    2. Concerning the first possible SFP incident: I doubt that this is SFP for UEFA, however, I would definitely go for a straight red card.
Hitting point really high and force was not low either...

    3. YC #17 MKD - reckless or SFP?
SFP and RC; #17 lunges in with stretched leg and studs ahead, hitting opponent above the ankle. If opponent's foot would have been fixed in the turf, serious injury would have been the result.

      Goal / offside (AR2) / simulation? / handball?
For me no clear simulation, nor clear deliberate handball. Of course the goal should have been disallowed for offside. Depending on the communication I think the referee is the first one responsible, because for the ASR it was very difficult to recognize who played the ball. As Ray stated, we'll probably never know.

YC #16 SRB and two further fouls of the same player later
Good decision not to send #16 off with a 2nd YC. Both offences for me are not enough to issue a YC. Obviously player was in the 'danger zone' for receiving a 2nd YC for persistent infringement.

      Handball penalty
Good call for the exact reasons Ray mentioned

YC #22 SRB - reckless or SFP?
YC for reckless tackle is correct; #22 first plays the ball and then, due to momentum, hits the opponent with studs. At the moment of contact he immediately bends his leg to minimize the intensity of the contact. For me YC is the right decision here.

      Delete
    4. First goal of course offside but I think it was also a dive before the pass to the offside standning player that the referee ignored.

    5. Pankov from Serbia was sent off after final whistle.
Are there videos of this incident?

      Delete
    6. Unfortunately TV didn't catch the incident. There are several SRB players seen protesting after the final whistle, but nothing more.

      Delete
    7. First goal scored by Serbia is indeed a very interesting and particular situation, here referee and AR should have cooperated but unluckily I see that this didn't happen. Second video shows that there wasn't any touch by Macedonian defender, so the offside should have been raised. AR was responsible for that: he should have informed and asked referee for knowing who had touched the ball. I think this cooperation didn't occurred at all, looking at Madden in the second video, and this isn't good.

Regarding other incidents: I think the Scottish could be backed regarding the first situation, YC for reckless tackle can be still OK, even though the challenge was very borderline to SFP, late, from behind and absolutely dangerous. I think the hitting point is not so high but of course this is only a small particular. It stays as very, very rough.
Penalty for deliberate handball is OK.

      Delete
    8. My overall mark would be 8.3 but two potential important mistakes (SFP and offside goal). Niclas will decide. :)

      Delete
    9. Well, both are easy to evaluate by watching the videos: Clear SFP and clear offside, for me also a simulation before (but that's at least a little bit controversial).

But during the game it was definitely not so easy. In the real speed, it was difficult to detect the high intensity of the foul. Given the circumstances (12', first tougher foul), I understand Madden, but it's definitely too less what he did (I don't mean his YC only, I mean especially his whole approach in this situation).

Regarding the goal, as I said I wished a YC for diving. But if he does not and the game continues, it is really difficult to give your focus during some seconds from the one situation (foul or not?) to a completely different one you don't expect in this second (offside or not? who touched the ball last?). So, again, I understand Madden's mistake but on the other hand that's one of the 40 best referees of Europe, one who wants to come to the best 20, probably we can expect to solve also that difficult situations correctly, for example with a better (nearer) positioning...

      Delete
    10. By the way, the last time I've seen Madden he missed 2 SFP (Villareal-Salzburg), this time again 1...

      Delete
    11. In my view, the referee is (also) responsible for the offside goal, but on the other hand, he had to be focussed on assessing the foul/dive-incident. Cognitive capacities are limited and I understand that multitasking was difficult there. But I think cooperation in the trio ref-AR1-AAR1 could be reflected after the game.

Positioning was a general problem for me, such as his very limited verbal communication. Rather significant points for improvement and no details.

And, unfortunately also within AR1's line of sight, the tackle in 83' is a clear red card for my taste.

      Delete
    12. My dear, I didn't see the second possible SFP-video at first. I agree with you, that's not reckless any more. As I already mentioned, same counts for the first video, according to my opinion. Maybe I shouldn't watch Madden again - every time, I see him, he misses 2 SFPs...

    1. I clearly tend to a red card in terms of the 69' clip. The stud contact type in such a height is normally very typical of deeming it as SFP minimum (if not VC).

On the other hand, it was no full touch and the intensity was for me only moderate, not high, and the force was rather not excessive from my point of view. Tendency: red, but for me no clear (=100%) mistake.

Gözübüyük wasn't really challenged, there were five further cautions, all correct: two for reckless challenges, one for delaying restart, one for obstruction and one for SPA. In his card selection - especially in reckless challenges - he was really consistent. So overall a good performance in an easy-going game, and if I'd be the assessor, I'd mark him with a solid 8.4.

Anyone here who could confirm my impressions?

  34. Very good match again from Gozubuyk and his team. Totally full control. I like his style and attitude. For me Gozubuyk, Stieler, Vincic the candidates next match

    1. I agree that Gözübüyük and especially Vinčić are strong names for the last matches, but I fear that Stieler's tournament might be over, since Germany's chances to reach the semifinals are very high now.
